48 hours in the Marrakech medina: the perfect itinerary

Two days in the heart of the medina

The Marrakech medina reveals itself slowly, if you let it carry you. Here's a two-day itinerary to see the essentials without rushing, from morning souks to evening rooftops.

Day 1 — Morning: Jemaa el-Fna and the souks

Reach Jemaa el-Fna square at dawn, while it still breathes. Then head into the souks: Semmarine for fabrics, Haddadine for metalwork, Cherratine for leather. Let the scent of spices and the hammering of workshops guide you.

Day 1 — Afternoon: palaces and heritage

Make for the Bahia Palace and its patios, then the Ben Youssef Medersa, a former Quranic school with dazzling décor. If time allows, add the Saadian Tombs.

Day 1 — Evening: Jemaa el-Fna by night

The square transforms: grill stalls, orange juice, storytellers and musicians. Dine on a terrace to take in the spectacle from above.

Day 2 — Morning: gardens and rooftops

Start at Le Jardin Secret, a haven of greenery and fountains, then climb to a rooftop for mint tea facing the ochre roofs and the Atlas.

Day 2 — Afternoon: unwind

Treat yourself to a traditional hammam, then one last wander to bring home lanterns, slippers or spices.

Tips

Wear comfortable shoes, keep small change, agree on prices before buying, and don't be afraid to get lost — that's the charm of the medina.

Host tip: pick a landmark (the Koutoubia, a gate) to find your bearings in the maze.

Your Altitude Habitat riad awaits in the heart of the old city.
