Casablanca, the Morocco that faces the ocean

Morocco's largest city and its economic capital, Casablanca surprises anyone who treats it as a mere stopover. Here, 1930s Art Deco converses with minarets, the cafés of the corniche and the Atlantic surf. Allow two to three days to feel its energy.

When to go

The ocean climate stays mild all year. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the best conditions: clear skies, bearable heat and a sea breeze. Summer is pleasant by the beach, and winter remains gentle.

The Hassan II Mosque

This is the unmissable landmark: one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the water and crowned by a minaret more than 200 metres tall. Non-Muslim visitors can see the interior only on guided tours (around 45 minutes to an hour); dress modestly.

Art Deco and heritage

Downtown preserves a fine Art Deco ensemble, best explored on foot around Boulevard Mohammed V and Mohammed V Square. Don't miss the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral (now deconsecrated), the Mahkama du Pacha with its zellige tilework, and the Villa des Arts for modern Moroccan art.

The Habous Quarter

This "new medina", built in the 1930s, blends French town planning with Moroccan craftsmanship. Orderly lanes, artisan workshops, bookshops and pastry stalls make it the perfect place to find a souvenir without the crowds of the bigger medinas.

By the water

The Aïn Diab Corniche lines up cafés, beach clubs and seafood restaurants. Walk it at sunset facing the mosque, stop by the Morocco Mall, or dine at the famous Rick's Café, a nod to the 1942 film.

Flavours

A port city, Casablanca is best enjoyed seaside: grilled fish and seafood, plus the Marché Central for atmosphere and colourful stalls. In the evening, the food ranges from tagine to international tables.

An easy escape

Rabat, the capital, is under an hour away by train and makes a great day trip (Hassan Tower, Kasbah of the Udayas).

Practical tips

The tram and metered "petits taxis" make getting around easy. Book the mosque tour ahead and dress modestly near places of worship.
